Qatar meet UAE today in decisive group clash of Gulf Cup

Doha [Qatar], September 30: Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will meet in a decisive final-round Group B clash of the 27th Gulf Cup at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Wednesday, with both sides already assured of places in the semi-finals.
The match will determine who finishes top of the group, with both teams entering the final round on six points after winning their opening two matches. The UAE currently hold the advantage on goal difference, meaning a draw would be enough for them to retain first place.
Qatar have made a strong start to the tournament, defeating Bahrain 2-0 before edging Yemen 1-0. The Maroons have yet to concede a goal, keeping clean sheets in both matches.
The UAE have been equally impressive, beating Yemen 4-0 before recording a 3-0 victory over Bahrain. Their seven-goal tally leaves them ahead of Qatar on goal difference.
With both teams already through to the knockout stage, tomorrow's encounter will provide an opportunity to compete for first place while also fine-tuning preparations for the semi-finals.
"Winning our first two matches has given us great momentum, and the morale within the team is very high. We know the preparation time is short in tournaments like this, but we have to adapt quickly. Our focus now is to maintain that momentum, perform at our best and put in a strong performance against the UAE," Qatar captain Hassan Al Haydos said.
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui said his team would approach the match with the same focus shown in their opening two games. "Our goal is to repeat the performance we have shown in the previous two matches, deliver the best possible level of play and maintain high morale ahead of the semifinals," he said.
The Spanish coach explained that securing semi-final qualification early had been an important objective for his technical staff, as it allowed the team to manage the demands of the tournament and give more players valuable minutes.
"Reaching the semi-finals early was one of the objectives we set with the technical staff. It allowed us to alleviate the pressure on the players and give playing time to the greatest possible number of squad members."
That rotation, Lopetegui added, was intended to ensure that the entire squad remained ready for the knockout stage. We wanted to make sure that the whole group was match-ready ahead of the knockout stage."
Lopetegui also addressed the frequent substitutions made during Qatar's opening matches, saying fatigue had been a factor as the squad continues to recover between games.
"Some players have been suffering from fatigue and exhaustion, and we are currently in a recovery phase," he said.
The coach has yet to finalize his starting lineup for the UAE encounter, leaving open the possibility of further changes as Qatar manage the physical demands of the tournament.
"I have not yet finalized the lineup for the match against the UAE. I always strive to select the best available players."
The match therefore offers Qatar another opportunity to assess different combinations and maintain competitive sharpness before the semifinals, while also providing a test against an UAE side that has produced two emphatic victories.
In Group A, Saudi Arabia are at the top with 9 points while Oman and Iraq have 4 points each, and Kuwait are yet to open account.
