UK urges China to 'live up to intl. obligations'

London (United Kingdom), July 29: British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has urged China to live up to its international human rights obligations.
Raab told his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi over the phone on Tuesday that Britain wants to maintain a positive and constructive relationship with China.
But he said Beijing must fulfill its responsibility to rebuild trust from the international community.
Raab said Britain is watching the Hong Kong Legislative Council election scheduled for September. He also argued that serious human rights abuses against Muslim minority Uighurs are undeniable.
Relations between the two countries have soured after China introduced the national security law for Hong Kong.
Britain has suspended an extradition treaty with the territory.
It also retracted an earlier decision on telecom suppliers and announced that the country will remove Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei from 5G next-generation mobile networks by 2027.
