Qatar's men's volleyball team faces Japan test
Qatar's men's volleyball team faces a major challenge on Thursday when they take on hosts Japan in the quarter-finals of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
The highly anticipated encounter brings together two teams with considerable technical and physical qualities and experience, while Japan will also have the advantage of playing on home soil and in front of their supporters.
Team Qatar booked their place in the quarter-finals after finishing runners-up in Group C. They recorded successive victories over Hong Kong and Vietnam before losing 3-2 to India in their final group match in one of the tournament's most closely contested encounters so far.
Despite the defeat, Qatar produced an impressive performance and took a two-set lead after winning the opening set 28-26 and the second 27-25. India then fought back to level the match before the contest went to a deciding fifth set, which ended 24-22.
The match against Japan presents a completely different challenge from the group stage, with the knockout format leaving no room for recovery from defeat. Concentration will therefore be crucial from the opening point until the last, particularly with Japan expected to receive strong home support.
Qatar's technical staff, led by Argentine coach Soto, are fully aware of the difficulty of the task but enter the match with confidence in the players' abilities.
Soto also has the advantage of previous knowledge of the Japanese team, with Qatar having faced them in a friendly during their pre-Games training camp.
The Argentine coach is expected to devise a plan aimed at limiting Japan's threat, with particular emphasis on serving, reception and handling attacking plays, as well as maintaining concentration during the decisive points.
